Dear internet, this is how you gently and thoughtfully change people’s minds. No shaming, no yelling, just a nice nudge to, “Aha!”
I will aspire to use classy same tone next time I try to educate someone about something!
in before someone screams “TONE POLICING” at you
This is the difference between a “call out” (which assumes there is one universal right which everyone should know, and no one but you seems to achieve) and a “call in" (which assumes that we are all learning and hopes that everyone is willing to learn).
Call outs can be cathartic but they tend to work on a social capital, good v bad system. Call ins can be really taxing and require that a. one person is willing to teach and b. one person is able to learn, but they prevent the disenfrancisement which often results when you’re in socially-aware spaces and there’s much less potential for abuse.
